Last month, I had the privilege of attending the 8th International Materials Handling Research Colloquium at the Technical University in Graz, Austria.
This remarkable event is supported and conducted by our own materials handling industry associations; MHI, MHIA and CICMHE. Gracious sponsorship was provided by a few of the Austrian materials handling suppliers; Knapp, Schaefer Peem, Salomon Automation and TGW.
I have been to previous offerings and I am always impressed at how smart, creative – and sometimes funny, these university professors are. The international dimension of the colloquium provides an interesting perspective on the differences in approach from those in other parts of the world.

James M. Apple, Jr. is a Director in The Progress Group. Prior to co-founding The Progress Group in 1991, he was a Partner with Coopers & Lybrand's SysteCon division. During 1992-1995 he served as a Senior Systems Advisor with Vanderlande Industries, a major conveyor and systems provider in Europe.
